Weather Forecasting - The Country Way
This book was given to me by the General Art department during my placement at Penguin Books. I was asked to both illustrate and design the front and back cover. The book is about old fashioned weather forecasting techniques and the brief was to design a cover that was beautiful and decorative.
This project involved quite a short deadline (of 3 weeks) and as I was on placement at the time I had the opportunity to see the cover through the process from start to finish - from getting immediate feedback on my ideas, to the copy corrections and text layout on the back as well as the slightly surreal task of writing 'illustrated and designed by Kirsty White' on the back! This was also my first illustrator job, creating the typeface based on Garamond.
Weather Forecasting came out to buy on the 30th of April. It was pretty incredible to have a book I had designed the cover for in my local Waterstones! available
It is available to buy here: Weather Forecasting - The Country Way
The original pencil drawing consisted of images of different ways the weather can be predicted using; waves, clouds, flowers, trees, the time of year certain plants come out, and animal behaviour, to name a few. I gave it quite a fluid design, similar to that of the Perfume cover to give a similar narrative feel of the eye being led through the seasons - with the curves I also hoped to mimc pressure lines.
I also illustrated some recognisable weather symbols because I love the simplicity of those pared down symbols representing a whole variety of weather conditions! The colouring of the final design was taken from some old weather forecasting charts which I thought worked quite beautifully together.
My name on an actual book - which is possible to buy from real live shops!
